Description
The house of Goethe is the residence where Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832) spent his stay in Rome from 1786 to 1788, a guest of his friend the German painter J.H.W. Tischbein.
Manuscripts, sculptures, drawings, and graphic works that remember the celebrated host are exhibited in the various halls (about 600 square meters). The well-known portrait by the pop-artist Andy Warhol is also exhibited. All leads back to the central theme of Goethe’s journey to Italy and to the deep influence that the country exercised on him in the formulation of his aesthetic theory. The Casa, institution member of AsKI (German Association of Autonomous Culture Institutes) in Bonn, also promotes cultural events such as exhibitions, conferences, readings, concerts, and film projections. The internal specialized library that contains many first editions, illustrated editions, and critic bibliographies by and on the poet can be consulted byappointment.
