Description

A museum in the Roman city limits that tells the story of the Appio Tuscolano area from prehistoric and protohistoric times to the Middle Ages.

The Antiquarium di Lucrezia Romana, with its 500 square metres of exhibition space, is made up of five rooms distributed between two buildings housing the finds from the archaeological investigations carried out in a large area of the south-eastern suburbs of Rome over the last 25 years.

The materials found during the excavations document the history of the area from Quadraro to Grotteferrata, including Osteria del Curato, Tor Vergata, Morena, Romanina, Centroni, Cinecittà, Anagnina and Appio-Tuscolano.

The exhibits include mainly grave goods: gold jewellery, small jewels and earrings, vases and oil lamps, as well as objects of daily life for women (make-up containers, tweezers, spatulas) and children. Among these, a baby bottle from prehistoric times is particularly moving.

There are also precious mosaics, coins, frescos and glass, as well as fragments of the valuable decorations from the villas and tombs that dotted the area in imperial times. These include an elegant architectural terracotta from the Augustan period, a portrait head in the Hellenistic style and three terracotta faces of gods.

Among the marbles are a Dionysian herm, an alabaster basin and a splendid statue of Hermaphrodite.

The museum is dedicated to the Calabrian-born archaeologist Giuseppe Vitale, who died prematurely in 2004 at the age of 37.
