Description

Ancient Ostia preserves one of the most important painting heritages of the Roman world in the imperial age. The insulae and domus - the subject of the itinerary - are residential in character and were inhabited by a wealthy merchant and entrepreneurial class, endowed with good financial resources: they commissioned the work of embellishing the walls, ceilings and vaults of the dwellings with fine frescoes which, to this day, constitute the most significant evidence of Roman painting after the destruction of Pompeii.
