Description

The aqueduct was built by Nero (54 - 68 AD) to provide the Acqua Claudia (Claudia Water) to the Domus Aurea (Golden House), his luxurious imperial residence. Ruins of the Neronian aqueduct are still visible today along via Statilia and via S. Stefano Rotondo that goes from St. John Lateran square up to via della Navicella. In via dei SS. Giovanni e Paolo the ruins of the aqueduct can be seen to rest on and be incorporated by the Arch of Dolabella. The aqueduct was extended by Domitian to bring the water as far as the new imperial residence in the Palatine Hill and was restored under Septimius Severus.
