Description

SANTA MARIA DELLA SCALA The church of Santa Maria della Scala was built in the late 1500s instead of a simple little cottage. The latter’s stairway embodied a painting of a venerated image of the Madonna, to whose intercession the people of Trastevere attributed numerous miracles. Built in 1592 on a drawing by Francesco da Volterra, it was carried out by Ottaviano Mascherino, author of the façade in two overimposed orders of pilaster strips, linked between each other via big volutes. In a niche on top of the portal one finds a Madonna con il Bambino. The simple façade contrasts an interior based on a Latin cross and a single nave with three chapels per side, richly decorated with polychrome marbles and diverse altars.
