Description

In 1879 a mausoleum was built in Piazza San Pietro in Montorio to house the mortal remains of Garibaldi’s troops who fell while defending Rome against French forces in 1849, and during the insurrections of 1868 and 1870. The monument was demolished in 1941 when the one currently visible was built on Via Garibaldi by Giovanni Jacobucci. The architect later enlarged the structure to accommodate the fallen in the struggles against the Nazis in September 1943. The new mausoleum has a square plan with three arches on each side, and is enclosed by a transenna fence. In the centre there is a granite altar on which some Roman allegorical figures are depicted. The crypt contains slabs with the names of the fallen and a sarcophagus containing the mortal remains of Goffredo Mameli.
