Description
Traditional event that for decades involves all the inhabitants of Trastevere neighborhood, along with many Roman citizens and tourists. Focus of the festival are the celebrations in honor of the Madonna del Carmine, whose devotion dates back to 500 years ago.
In 1505, in fact, some fishermen found, in the lake at the mouth of the river Tiber, a floating trunk with a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary. They brought the statue to the Church of St. Grisogono in Trastevere up the river (hence the other name given to the Madonna del Camine, also known as Madonna Fiumarola)
Even today, during the festival, the image of the Virgin is carried in procession both through the streets of the neighborhood and by boat along the river.
