Description
Located within the house of the Knights of Rhodes, the Chapel of St. John the Baptist was built in 1946 by adapting the central part of the building, covered by a Renaissance vault.
The main building was once the seat of the Roman Priory of the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, later called the Knights of Rhodes and Malta. The knights settled there at the end of the 12th century, building their headquarters on ancient Roman structures. When the Priory moved to the Aventine in 1566, the nuns of the Santissima Annunziata settled in the house. In 1946 the house was granted to the Order of Malta.
The façade on the slargo has a Romanesque denticulated cornice and a 15th century cross-shaped window. Through one of the doors, at the foot of the staircase, one enters the Augustan porticoed atrium, admirably preserved with travertine arches and pillars.
