Description

It was once one of the four round towers that rised beside the ruins of the Baths of Diocletian. In 1598 the Countess Caterina Nobili Sforza had the idea of turning it into a church. Similar to a pantheon in miniature, the round church has a dome with an octagonal tambour and a small opening on top, the only source of light. The outside is decorated with an architectural composition (1598) with stucco pilaster strips and ledges, including the portal, niches and squarings. Above the ledge is an octagonal raising used as an attic, with big oval frames. The round interior is covered by a ceiling with octagonal panels, similar to the one from the Pantheon. Around the perimeter, subdibided by an order of pilaster strips, one finds eight big rised niches holding statues of stucco saints, made by Mariani in 1600 circa. The latter also made the couples of angels in the mixtilines outside the arches and of angels next to the commemorative plaque for the founder.
