Description

Thepresent church was on the medieval one of the Santissimi Quaranta Martiri delCalcarario, so-called due to the fact that the area used to house furnaceswhere buildings’ ruins would be cooked and turned into white lime. In 1697 Clemente VIIIconceded it to the Arciconfraternita delle Stimmate di San Francesco. In 1714 it was then rebuilt on the basis of a project by GiovanniBattista Contini and completed in 1721. Thefaçade with two orders presents, in the lower part, a porch with a portalsurmounted by a rounded arch. On top of the architrave a broken tympanum holdsa stucco statue of San Francesco attributed to Antonio Raggi. In the superiororder a big window opens up, decorated with a stucco seraph head. The whole structureis then crowned by the coat of arms of the Arciconfraternita delle Stimmate. Theinterior embodies a plan with a single nave and three chapels per side. In thebottom there is an altar piece dating back to 1719, renowned as the “Stimmatedi San Francesco” by Francesco Trevisani.
