Description

The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Philip Martyr was founded at the behest of Pope Pius XII, who wanted to dedicate to the Mexicans and all the peoples of Latin America a place of worship dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, who had already been declared Patroness of America by Pope Pius X in 1910. It was awarded the title of Basilica Minor by Pope John Paul II.

The church was built between 1955 and 1958, elevated to Parish status on 22 September 1960.

Of particular interest behind the altar is the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in the apse valuable mosaics as well as along the aisles where the faces of the national patron saints of North, Central and South American countries are depicted.

Along the aisles one can also admire the sculptures depicting the Way of the Cross, the work of Luigi Enzo Mattei, author of the Body of Man of the Shroud.

To meet the needs of the parish community, catechetical rooms, a parish theatre that also serves as a conference hall, and a small sports field have been added over the years to the worship rooms.
The parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Philip Martyr was built between 1955 and 1958 to a design by architect Gianni Mazzocca and is Mexico's national church in Rome. It was consecrated by Cardinal Vicar Clemente Micara on 12 December 1958 and became a parish in 1960.
