Description

Descrizione:
SAN VITALE It was built between the Viminale and Esquilino hills during the early C. V made by order of Pope Innocenzo I. In 1475 it was rebuilt by Sisto IV and then restored in 1595 by Clemente VIII, while in 1859 Pio IX ordered the building of a connecting stairway, for the construction of Via Nazionale and the consequent raising of the road level. The bare façade is preceded by the abovementioned stairway and by a roofed porch, with five arcades on antique columns, with pulvin capitals, repeated on the façade under the porch. Quite impressive is the fifteen-century portal with the coat of arms of Pope Sito IV and the carved panels dated C. XVII. The interior, originally consisting of three naves, was reduced to one only during the restoration that occurred in 1475. The wide walls were frescoed during C. XVI by Cavalier d'Arpino, Andrea Pozzo and by Gaspare Poussin, and represent architectures and landscapes animated by "Storiette di Santi e di Martiri".
