The International House of Women has been reopened in Rome, it is located in Via della Lungara, in a building which was built during the century of 1600 and it is called “Buon Pastore” (Good Shepherd). More than 40 associations, some constitute a society, have brouht to life a big project, (which is unique in Italy), which talks about the history and success of women’s liberation movement. A corageous commitment, a very hospitable place where women of the world can meet, offers many services and political and cultural activities open to the collectivity.
Within the complex you can find: a store which sells products hand-made by female artisans and people of the Third World, a book store and a coffee shop, a convention center, a documentation center, an historic library of the women’s liberation movement and a library. It is possible to hold courses, performances, exhibitions, seminars and new book presentations. Within the complex are also offerred psicological consultences, legal consultants, and a health center.
In order to have easy access to these services, at the ground floor there is a restaurant-bar located at the center of the garden. The ceilings are high with arch sahaped wooden beams in sight, the furnishings are comprised of dark wood furniture mixed with modern functional furniture, which makes it a very pleasant for organizing work oriented meals or a candle light dinner. Access to the Foresteria “Orsa Maggiore” can be achieved by climbing up the carved rock stairway, and is located at the second floor of the building. Classical historical ceilings with wooden beams and brick floors, an informal environment and it is equipped with 35 beds within 9 rooms, distributed in multiple and single rooms furnished with modern furniture, integrated with the original atmsphere and achitecture of the 1600s. All the room are furnished with an individual wardrobe, sheets and pillow cases, blankets , towels, a desk and with heat. The majority of these rooms face the quiet garden, where there is a magnolia which is over one hundred years old. Within the foresteria, there is at everyone’s disposal a room, where one can watch television equipped with a satellite antenna, where a library is kept, where magazines are stored, and also table games are kept.
