Description

The Napoleonic Museum exhibits relics, family souvenirs, and works of art. It includes miniatures, jewels, furniture, and court dresses. The graphical works (drawings, water-colors, and prints), manuscripts, and ancient books coming from the private libraries of the Bonapart family are of particular interest.
The collection was started by count Giuseppe Primoli (descendant in female line from the Bonaparts) through important family donations and purchases from the antiquary market. In 1925 the collection of his brother Luigi was also merged in it. The entire collection was donated in 1927 by the count together with the first floor of Palazzo Primoli to the Municipality of Rome that in 1929 opened the museum to the public. Successively the collection was increased with purchases and donations by private collectors. The sixteenth century building that houses the museum had belonged to the Gottifredi and Filonardi families. It was purchased in 1828 by Luigi Primoli, count Giuseppe’s grandfather and inherited by the count who had it enlarged and restructured between 1904 and 1911 by the architect Raffaele Ojetti. Currently the building houses also the Primoli Foundation, created by Giuseppe Primoli himself to promote the cultural relations between Italy and France, and the Primoli Library, consisting of over thirty thousand books on literature, history, and art. Since 1995 it also houses the Mario Praz Museum.
