Description

This is the former Diesel Power Station that was the first public electric installation in Rome. It was realized on a project by Giovanni Montemartini (whom it is named after) and inaugurated in1912. Its activity that extended up to the fifties, terminated definitively inthe early seventies. After a detailed work of restoration completed between1989 and 1990, it was transformed into a Multimedia Center capable of hosting meetings, shows, and museum activities: the Art Center Acea. More than 400 statues and manufactured valuables coming from the Capitoline Museums are exhibited next to the old machinery. These magnificent findings were discovered during the archaeological excavations performed at the end ofthe past century and in the thirties.
The exhibition consists of three widespaces:
Hall of Columns: it takes its name from the numerous armed-cement pillars that were built to support the boilers above. On the ceiling one can still see the system that collected the waste of coal that fed the boilers. The exhibition of sculptures illustrates the most ancient city phases, from the archaic to the late republican phase. The ruins of the sixth century BC of a temple that was brought to light in the thirties next to the church of St. Homobonus are of particular interest.
Hall of Machines: two completely restored enormous Diesel engines and a steam turbine, an actual antique, have been set up in this hall. A gallery of statues and beautiful Roman copies of the late Republican Age, inspired by the more famous Greek originals, introduce to the great archaeological complexes exhibited at the back to the hall. A colossal statue of Athena stands opposite the figure of Athena from the pediment of the temple of Apollo Sosianus, building discovered on the via del Mare.
Hall of Boilers: a huge vapor boiler, the only one of three to survive,  towers on one of the small sides of the hall. Real masterpieces that belonged to the emperor or to high court dignitaries are exhibited in this hall. They were discovered during the excavations of 1870 at the Quirinal, the Viminal, and the Esquiline, areas where the horti, the residential complexes of the noble families of the late republic rose.

> Special openings of the museum can be arranged for:
- private educational tours (max 200 people)
- private events in the Hall of Machines (max 110 people seated); on the mezzanine level of the Boiler Room (max 100 people seated/ 70 standing)
