Historical notes
The San Paolo workshop began operating in July 1910.
Work began in 1908; the original project was signed by engineer Ulderico Bencivenga. Between 1908 and 1910, the Anglo-Roman Company presented projects to the Building Commission for the production and auxiliary plants of two workshops on the Ostiense.

This type of gasometer used in Rome is called a 'telescope', as the inner cylinder rises up through the side guides, indicating the capacity of the gas it contains.

The three smaller gasometers, which came into operation between 1910 and 1912, were built by Samuel Cuttler & sons London, and had a capacity of 25,000 cu m and 60,000 cu m respectively. (the third).

The large gasometer, which was later subjected to an architectural restriction, was instead built in 1936 by the Klonne Dortmund and Ansaldo company of Genoa, and has a capacity of 200,000 m3.

Various extraordinary maintenance works were carried out in 1966, 1968 and 1974.  In 1923, with the exit of British capital, Anglo Romana took the name of Società Elettricità e Gas di Roma. Within two years the two companies split up and on 21 December 1925 the Società Romana Gas was established.

At the beginning of 1960, in anticipation of the imminent arrival of natural gas in Rome, ultra-modern plants of high potential were built for the catalytic reforming of methane. Between 1966 and 1967, SNAM acquired 30% of the capital of Italgas. In 1970, methane entered the first houses in the Spinaceto district and 1981 marked the start of work on the complete methanisation of Rome.

Today, Esercizio Romana Gas (ITALGAS) is exclusively responsible for the methane distribution network.

The buildings of the former gasworks have been gradually decommissioned since the years
