Description

The archaeological area of the Stadium of Domitian "today Piazza Navona" in Rome "First example of a masonry athletics stadium built in Rome. A unique testimony to the history of sport' has been reopened to the public after years of restoration.
An archaeological area in the historic centre, saved from overbuilding, located in the beautiful setting of one of the most visited squares in the world 'Piazza Navona'.
The basic mission is to tell a "concentrated information on Romanity", an "infopoint" that illustrates, with simplicity and immediacy, the monuments and traces, still preserved and visible; in addition to the vestiges of the Stadium is illustrated the history of sport and sports practices of antiquity, uses and customs, fusion between "theatrical" show and competition.
Panels and screens illustrate with graphs, photos and videos the history, the chronology of facts and personalities; special attention is obviously dedicated to the history of the Stadium.
The Stadium regains a strategic function, becoming a part of the Roman cultural tourism circuit. It also becomes a place for meeting and socialising: a cultural salon.
The cultural and educational activities, guided tours and additional services are promoted and coordinated by the "Associazione Culturale Amici dello Stadio di Domiziano a Piazza Navona" (Cultural Association of the Friends of Domitian's Stadium in Piazza Navona), studying initiatives for its better affirmation and protection.

THE UNDERGROUND PASSAGES OF PIAZZA NAVONA
The remains of the Stadium of Domitian (Unesco World Heritage Site) are located under Piazza Navona at about 4.50 metres above street level; the archaeological area is what remains of the first and only example of a masonry stadium known to date in Rome.
Audio guides, also for children (included in the ticket), 3D videos, panels and photos tell the story of the Stadium and the sports of Greco-Roman antiquity: wrestling, running, boxing, discus throwing, javelin throwing, jumping. Particular attention is also paid to the history of the Stadium and the Piazza.
