Description
Half-hidden from the city's view by the walls of the Tiber embankment and the leafy plane trees, the ancient river port of Testaccio stretches for about 150 metres along the left bank of the Tiber. Built in the first century A.D., it enjoyed a moment of great restructuring and commercial boom under Emperor Trajan.
The port is characterised by a long quay paved with travertine slabs, from which there is access to two rows of warehouses facing a cryptoportico corridor. On an upper floor were the offices. This is where goods from all over the Mediterranean arrived and were unloaded in the ports of Ostia and Porto, ready to be distributed to horrea throughout the city.
