Description

The complex of buildings that is within the Stadium of the Thermae of Caracalla has been identified as the Domus Parthorum, quoted in Regional Catalogs of the Constantinian Age. Three construction phases have been identified: the first phase includesa large nympheum with a central niche and three orders of niches on the sides, and a large rectangular hall. These structures were part of a public building of uncertain interpretation. In a second phase that may be dated back to the third century or to the first decades of the fourth century AD a circulardome-shaped room and a barrel-vaulted room that were probably part of a publicthermal system or of a rich private house were added. The third phase includes a room with an apsis that can be interpreted as a hall with a basilican plant and can be dated back to the fourth century AD. This is probably there presentation hall of an aristocratic house set up in the area when it was privatized in the late-ancient period. A fire that broke out at the beginning of the fifth century AD destroyed the complex that was then abandoned, except for the basilican hall that shows traces of successive restorations and transformations.
