Description

On the left-hand side of the via Appia Antica, a short distance from the Fourth Mile, is located the biggest circular mausoleum of the via Appia, aka Casal Rotondo. The building is formed by a cylindrical tambour, originally covered with travertine blocks. Part of the coverage was rebuilt by Luigi Canina in the middle of the 19th century. The mausoleum, whose owner is unknown, dates back to the beginning of the Augustan age (end of the first century BC). Later, on top of the sepulchre, a farmhouse was built exploiting the structure of a medieval tower owned by the Savelli family and part of a system of watchtowers located along the Appia. Beside the mausoleum, after the excavations of the middle of the 19th century, Luigi Canina built an architectural backdrop decorated with numerous marble fragments found in the surrounding area and belonging, according to the scholar, to a circular shrine located on top of the sepulchre. In the opinion of others, the fragments belonged to another funerary monument, maybe to be attributed to a member of the Aurelii Cotta family, since on a fragment we read Cotta.
